BART extension in place to connect Fremont to San Jose

January 15th, 2012

credit: facebook.com/bartsv

Last month, the VTA approved funding for the commencement of construction on the first phase of the BART extension, a 10 mile run from Fremont to San Jose.  With large financial incentives for early completion, it now looks as if the line may be ready by end of 2016 – a good 18 months earlier than the originally projected 2018 delivery. One of the remaining hurdles for the project was federal funding.  According to a recent San Jose Mercury News article, that obstacle has been overcome.

On Tuesday the U.S. Department of Transportation recommended to Congress that more than $900 million in federal aid be set aside for BART over the next decade the entire amount sought by local transportation officials for the $2.3 billion extension from Fremont to San Jose.

“This is it,” said Jack d’Annibale, communications director for Rep. Mike Honda, D-San Jose. “We’re on the goal line going in.”

This is sure to be a boom for our local workforce.  According to the Mercury News article:

The VTA estimates that the work will create 9,400 jobs, with 3,800 additional jobs created to support construction of the station areas, nearby roads, parking structures and transit centers.

“Our estimate is that this will mean 13,000 jobs over the course of the project,” VTA General Manager Michael Burns said. “This is a significant economic engine for the valley. Obviously it could not come at a better time.”

That is great news for our area as it connects us throughout the Bay Area with new public transportation options. Connectivity is key to carefree living and this BART expansion is sure to make enormous contributions, both lifestyle and environmental, for those who pick Park Lane West as their new home.
